“Initially, I came up with the chords for the intro. I aimed to incorporate as many chords as I could into my first song, which ended up being around 14,” Krieger explained. “I had all these chords but wasn’t sure how to integrate them. We started with the familiar line, ‘Baby, light my fire…’ and then I mentioned, ‘oh, I have this other part.’”
He elaborated, “We decided to use that part to transition out of the instrumental break back into the third verse. We performed it that way at The Whisky for a year. It was actually producer Paul Rothchild who suggested we use those chords not only in the intro but also in the outro, creating a recurring motif throughout the song.”
As Ray Manzarek, the band’s keyboardist, played the piece nightly at The Whisky, he began to introduce more complex, Bach-inspired elements. “It wasn’t just a simple addition; it required a lot of time and effort,” Krieger noted.
